Frequently asked questions

Q. Is Acupuncture Painful?

A. Acupuncture is not painful, and the sensation does not resemble that of a hypodermic needle. Some patients report feeling tingling, heaviness, warmth or a slight ache. Our needles are very thin and most patients report feeling very little at all. Often patients feel deeply relaxed once the needles are in, and many even fall asleep.

Q. Are there any side effects?

A. Other than an occasional bruise, with a licensed practitioner acupuncture is very safe. Positive side effects include: stress relief, better digestion and better sleep.

Q. What should I expect at my first treatment?

A. The Acupuncturist will do a thorough health intake, examine your tongue and take your pulse. You will get comfortable on a massage table or in a recliner for your treatment. The needles are inserted very quickly, and then you rest. Most people relax deeply, or even fall asleep.

Q. What should I wear?

A. Wear something loose and comfortable that easily slides up above your knees and elbows.

Q. Is it safe?

A. Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist. Acupuncturists complete extensive safety training including specific trainings on Clean Needle Technique (CNT). All needles are single use and sterile.

Q. What types of tools do acupuncturists use?

A. In addition to single use, sterile acupuncture needles acupuncturists use a variety of other tools. Manual techniques are utilized such as Cupping Therapy, Gua Sha (a tool assisted massage technique) and Tuina massage. Additionally your acupuncturist might use Infrared heat therapy, prescribe Chinese Herbs and make recommendations for supplements.
